Right through the centre of the alder was a strand of barbed wire, totally invisible from the outside. Obviously years previously someone had wrapped or nailed 'wire to the trunk of the tree and the tree had then, slowly but surely grown around and absorbed it!

And as to mattocks. I love my mattock! The only tool for getting out tree and shrub stumps and roots! There's not enough mattocking in the world, imho.David Marsdenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10194429506546837258noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33596622.post-48473318725379381332011-02-09T14:52:40.753+00:002011-02-09T14:52:40.753+00:00Su - yes please! Just because it's one of those tools that sounds fab, really, not because I need one.

AG: Daffs? And they look so dainty! I love it when plants reclaim land for themselves: it reminds you we're not as all-powerful as we think we are.

Plantaliscious - don't you believe it. My hazels are the toughest plant in the patch - in fact never mind the mattock, a machete may be a better purchase just to fight them back every year....The Constant Gardenerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01219672153177538912noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33596622.post-29693827511430732942011-02-09T14:37:15.941+00:002011-02-09T14:37:15.941+00:00That's pretty impressive - and "hazel&quo...That's pretty impressive - and "hazel" sounds so dainty...Janet/Plantaliscioushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15605580157193047780noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33596622.post-66465414507888718402011-02-09T14:05:49.615+00:002011-02-09T14:05:49.615+00:00Plants are amazing - in my last house I could not ...Plants are amazing - in my last house I could not believe when daffs came up through the tarmac drive way!

KKaren Hallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12685625739001044636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33596622.post-59182207619126267432011-02-08T20:27:48.725+00:002011-02-08T20:27:48.725+00:00I inherited a pick axe when I moved here, that'...I inherited a pick axe when I moved here, that's my standard fall back now when all else has failed!
