Postcard from Borneo #1: Of mountains and jungles

Apologies for the lengthy silence - I've just been off on my hols. And we're not talking Torremolinos: I abandoned small children to ever-patient husband and set off halfway around the world to explore the jungles of Borneo.

Since there is, unsurprisingly and rather refreshingly, no internet access in the jungle, I thought I'd follow the time-honoured tradition of only sending your postcards once you've arrived home and hoping nobody notices the postmark.

Mount Kinabalu, just outside the capital, Kota Kinabalu and the view that dominated the first half of the week.

This is not a small mountain: 4000 feet or so of solid granite, and it's still growing.

Best of all, it is cloaked in rainforest: and there be rare plants in them thar hills.....

What a breathtaking place. How was your breathing going so high?
I had a friend that went to columbia, Said he passed out and had a hard time breathing.
I know Columbia isn't where you were, but you were high.

Ahh. I was wondering where you had got to. Borneo looks spectacular. Lucky you going on such a great trip. I'm going to San Francisco tomorrow, and hope to see lots of giant redwoods and nice gardens. But you can't beat a bit of rainforest...

VP - thanks, and yes it is really rather wonderful :D

Thanks for the info about Malvern - I'm expecting to go with the RHS on a press pass so I think I'm OK thanks! So looking forward to it...

LPG: we weren't really high enough to have problems breathing as we were total wimps and only went about halfway up. If you climb right on top of that peak you're much higher (and braver) - it snows up there, which is quite a feat when it's 35 degrees at ground level.

Camilla - have a fantastic holiday! I've been to California to see the redwoods too... Amazing. You won't get the crick out of your neck for weeks :D
